St. Mary of the Lake School

Homework, Redo, Assessment & Attendance Protocols

Homework Protocol:

Based on guidelines laid out by the Alberta Education Act teachers at St. Mary of the Lake will assign no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade level (ie Gr 2 = 20 min) on any given evening. Teachers may assign less or none on a given evening. Homework is assigned to do one of several things.

  1. Reading with one’s learner is considered part of regular homework

  2. Homework will focus on preparing students for upcoming tests, to catch up on assignments they may have missed due to absence, or not completed in the  allotted classroom time

  3. Homework may be assigned on a daily or weekly basis, please contact your student’s teacher if you have questions about this.

Redo Protocol:

Students may, on occasion, do poorly on a summative assignment or test. It is possible to approach classroom teachers to request a reassessment of their work. This will be decided on a case by case basis. In the event that it is decided that there will be a redo/reassessment of their knowledge/ability, there will be an agreed upon remediation to be completed by the student in preparation for a teacher directed interview to determine a reassessment grade through interview. In the event that the remediation and interview leads to a lower grade than that scored on the original test or assignment the original grade will be maintained.

Assessment Protocol:

Our K-6 schools across Living Waters School division have adopted the following assessment rubric for the 2019-2020 school year; our goal is to help bring alignment across the division in our assessment practices to ensure that as an accurate reflection of student achievement reflected. Please note that these grades will be applied to the standards contained in the Alberta Program of Studies.

Attendance Codes:

Please note that Living Waters Separate School Division, in order to align with provincial standards, has adopted the absence codes recognized by Alberta Learning. We firmly believe that students are best served by having regular attendance; we also recognize the right of a parent to have their students absent from school. Please note that this year the following codes will be applied to student absences. Note that school excusable absences include: buses not running, closure due to fire, flood, threat, or, illness, medical and bereavement.
